Launch of Primary Teacher Residency Programs

On 4th October 2023 at Rwanda Basic Education Board Headquarters,  Honorable Minister of Education, Gaspard Twagirayezu launched the  Primary Teacher Residency Programs. This program  will focus on Evidence-based Pedagogy, 21st Century Skills and Teaching Practicum.

In his closing remarks, Honorable Minister said that the program will help in building teacher capacity and reflective practices.

The program will consist of 40% classrooms instruction, with a focus on evidence-based pedagogy and 21st century skills, complemented by 60% guided teaching practice in primary schools. This hands on experience in tailoring for pre-service teachers who have successfully completed 3 years at TTC. During the pilot phase, the program will accommodate a maximum enrollment of 100 TTC graduates, representing diverse profiles, including females and males, high, middle, and low-performing students from all 16 Teacher Training Colleges in Rwanda.

DG REB, Dr. Mbarushimana said that the pilot phase of the Primary Teacher Residency Program stands as a transformative initiative aimed at elevating the quality of education in Rwanda. He added that it will be implemented in in two teacher training colleges which are TTC Save and TTC de la Sale Byumba, they will host 50 student teachers at each TTC, totaling 100 residents.

 In 12 months, it will provide prospective teachers with the indispensable knowledge, practice, and attitude required for success in modern classrooms.

All of 100 Teacher Residents were given laptops which will help them in their activities as the program suggests order to support them to reach the desired objectives and do a research where needed.
