Director General of Rwanda Basic Education Board; Dr MBARUSHIMANA Nelson Leads Mass Sports Campaign at TTC Mbuga, Calling for Academic Excellence, Rwandan Values and Talent Development

On a vibrant day filled with energy, and a shared commitment to learners' well-being, TTC Mbuga in Nyamagabe District transformed into more than a school campus; it became a symbol of Rwanda's vision for holistic education, where academic excellence, physical wellness, cultural values and talent development go hand in hand.

The mass sports event, organized through a partnership between the Ministry of Sports and the Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB), brought together students, teachers, education leaders, district authorities and entertainers, all united by one objective: building healthier, more disciplined and more talented young people.

Leading from the front was the Director General of REB, Dr. Nelson Mbarushimana, who exercised alongside students and teachers, demonstrating that education is not confined to classrooms but extends to every activity that shapes learners into responsible citizens. The event also served as a platform to reinforce an important national message: Rwanda's future will be determined by the quality of education and the values instilled in today's learners.

Dr. Nelson Mbarushimana: Academic Excellence, Rwandan Values and Vision 2050 Must Go Together

Addressing hundreds of students and teachers gathered at TTC Mbuga, Dr. Nelson Mbarushimana used the occasion to remind learners that the end of the academic year is approaching and that preparation should begin now.

He called upon all students to prepare seriously for the 2025–2026 end-of-year examinations and extended his best wishes to candidates preparing to sit for the national examinations. At the same time, he emphasized that physical activity is not a distraction from learning but an important ingredient for academic success.

“As you prepare for your end-of-year and national examinations, remain focused and disciplined. A healthy body contributes to a healthy mind, and both are essential ingredients for academic success.”

Beyond examination preparedness, Dr. Mbarushimana also engaged participants in a conversation about the importance of preserving and living by Rwanda's four core cultural values, explaining that quality education should produce citizens who are not only knowledgeable but also guided by strong principles.

He encouraged students to embrace Patriotism, Unity, Integrity, and Hard Work as foundational values that will help them become responsible citizens and future leaders. He reminded learners that these values should shape their behaviour both inside and outside the classroom and become part of their everyday lives. Turning his attention to Rwanda's long-term development aspirations, Dr. Mbarushimana reminded all students across the country that the future of Rwanda rests in the hands of a generation that receives quality education and understands its responsibility towards national development.

“The future of our country lies in your hands. Vision 2050 will be achieved through quality education that produces competent, responsible and visionary citizens.” He further noted that Rwanda's ambitions will be realised through well-prepared learners, competent teachers and citizens who possess a strong sense of purpose.

“The Rwanda we envision in 2050 will be built by enlightened educators and generations that are committed to advancing their country through knowledge, discipline and hard work.” His message perfectly aligned with REB's broader agenda of promoting quality education that develops every dimension of a learner's life: academically, physically, socially, culturally and morally.

Habyarimana Florent: Sports and Education Must Work Together to Unlock Young People's Potential

Another highlight of the event came from Habyarimana Florent, Head of the Sports Development Unit at the Ministry of Sports and the Guest of Honour for the day.

Recognizing the importance of creating opportunities for learners, he gifted TTC Mbuga with various sports balls for different sporting disciplines. The donation was welcomed enthusiastically by students, teachers and school leaders, who saw it as an investment in their talents and future opportunities.

Speaking during the event, Habyarimana reaffirmed the Ministry of Sports' commitment to continue working closely with Rwanda's education sector. “The Ministry of Sports will continue collaborating with Rwanda's education sector to provide knowledge on different sports disciplines to help young people develop and maximize their talents.”

He further stressed that teachers play a critical role in identifying, nurturing and guiding learners' talents. “Teachers have a major responsibility in helping students discover and develop sports talents that can eventually generate opportunities and benefits for them in the future.”

His message reinforced an important national ambition: sports should not be viewed merely as recreation but as a pathway that can open doors to opportunities, careers and socio-economic transformation. The gift of sports equipment therefore represented more than physical resources; it symbolized an investment in the future aspirations of Rwanda's young generation.

Nyamagabe Vice Mayor in charge of Socia Affairs: Let Us Make Mass Sports a Culture in Every School

Representing Nyamagabe District leadership, the Vice Mayor in charge of Socia Affairs Madam UWAMARIYA Agnes expressed gratitude to all partners who made the event possible.

She particularly appreciated the donation of sports equipment to TTC Mbuga, noting that such support strengthens schools' ability to nurture talents among young people. More importantly, She committed the district to expanding the initiative beyond one school.

“We appreciate all our guests and the generous donation of sports equipment given to TTC Mbuga. We will continue spreading this culture of mass sports to other schools across Nyamagabe and make it part of our everyday school culture.”

Her remarks highlighted the district's determination to institutionalize physical activity within schools and ensure that students throughout Nyamagabe benefit from similar opportunities.

Entertainment with Purpose: Gen-Z Comedy Inspires Young Talent

The event was also enlivened by the participation of Gen-Z Comedy Show, whose performances entertained participants while delivering an equally important message about youth creativity. Their presence served as a reminder that Rwanda's young people possess diverse talents that deserve recognition, mentorship and platforms for growth.

By integrating entertainment into the programme, organizers demonstrated that nurturing talent can happen in many forms, including performing arts, sports and creative expression.

At TTC Mbuga, mass sports was not simply an event on the calendar. It became a living demonstration that when education, health, culture, talent and leadership move together, schools become places where young people do not only learn for examinations; they learn how to build Rwanda's future.
