DG REB, DR.MBARUSHIMANA NELSON ADDRESSES PARTICIPANTS IN INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PLAY, EMPHASIZING IMPORTANCE OF RECREATION AND WELLNESS
On 11 June 2024, Rwanda celebrated the International Day of Play at Groupe Scolaire Gasanze in Nduba sector, Gasabo district with the theme: “Education for All Children in Africa: The Time Is Now.”
The keynote speaker at this event was the Director General of Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB), Dr. Mbarushimana Nelson who stated that today marked the “beginning of a week filled with fun, learning and play, leading up to the Day of the African Child on 16 June.”
Guests at this event toured the school and observed reading space and foundational learning activities whereby they read with and for the children. Not only that, they also interacted with school headteachers, teachers and parents in addition to observing and participating in children’s learning play based activities.
While addressing the audience at the event; DG REB, Dr. Mbarushimana Nelson said that Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC) in Rwanda emphasizes learner-centered, play-based learning as a major teaching and learning approach because of how important it is.
“Through play, you can explore, discover, and understand the world around you. It helps you grow emotionally, socially, and intellectually.” He said
“Play is not just about having fun; it is a vital part of your learning and development. When you play, you are not only enjoying yourselves but also developing important skills. As we embark on this week of celebration, let us remember that every game you play, every story you read, and every activity you participate in contributes to your growth and learning.” Dr. Nelson continued.
He also added that play enables learners to think creatively, solve problems, work as a team, and communicate effectively in addition to equipping students with skills to succeed both in school and life.
DG REB, Dr. Nelson also noted that all partners such as UNICEF, VSO, among others are committed to collaborate with “the Government, making sure every child in Rwanda has the opportunity to learn through play.”
Yonah Nyundo, UNICEF-Rwanda Education Officer said that due to how important play is in promoting learning, with the help of various teachers and local leaders trained across the country, they have done anything possible to nurture the culture of integrating play.
“Play is a device that helps children to learn which is why it needs to be applied in their curriculum so that it transforms their way of thinking in a flowing manner that of course helps them in their classes and studies in general.”
Sarah Challoner, the lead representative of Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO)-Rwanda, at the event remarked that “every child has the right to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to their age, and to participate freely.”
Fabrice Hakizimana, a student from GS Gasanze who took part in play activities that were held at their school said that “Playing helps them to strengthen muscles and promote good health which supports them in studying.”
Certain games which children participated in are Jump rope, Mabigibigi, Tug of war, among others.
This event included partners in collaboration with the Rwandan such as UNICEF, the LEGO Foundation, VSO, Right to Play, Kina Rwanda, Inspire, Educate and Empower Rwanda (IEE), among others.
In March 2024, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution establishing 11 June as the International Day of Play to champion and protect this right which is why this year was the first for this event to ever take place.
