Rwanda's Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) and Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB) in collaboration with Tony Blair Institute's (TBI) education programme, Generation Global are preparing to bring global citizenship education to over 4,000 Rwandan youth by connecting them to the world. As a first step of this partnership, 69 teachers from 10 pilot schools in Kigali, namely Lycée Notre Dame de Citeaux, GS Camp Kigali, GS Gatenga, GS Kicukiro, Kagarama SS, GS Kacyiru II, IFAK, Glory Secondary School, GS Busanza and College Saint Andre School were trained on Generation Global’s dialogue pedagogy and global citizenship education tools and resources. The 69 teachers selected to attend the training teach Senior two, four and five in areas of Geography and Environment, English, General Studies and Communication skills, ICT, and History and Citizenship. The training was held from 24th to 30th July 2023 in Kigali.
The training focused on providing teachers with the tools they need to incorporate dialogue –based learning into their lessons, enhancing the educational experience for their students. They learned about dialogue pedagogy, its distinctiveness from other communication methods, core skills, and practical activities, to support their students in building skills for the future.
During the training, participants used the Rwandan National Curriculum framework to design lesson plans aligned with Generation Global topics such as Climate Change, Culture, Beliefs & Values, Global Citizenship, Health & Well-being, Peace & Security, and Rights of Girls & Women. All participants have successfully registered on the Educators online portal and possess the necessary skills to create classes, add students to their account, and book their learners into a video conference.
The teacher training sessions received positive feedback from participants. The quality of both presentation materials and the trainers' delivery was highly praised, with a majority of respondents agreeing that they were of a high standard. The trainers' support throughout the training was also well-received. Participants expressed confidence in their understanding of dialogue concepts and the Generation Global core skills. They also felt equipped to implement activities for teaching these skills using online resources and tools. During the training, teachers were so confident that the skills gained about dialogue and lesson plan will help them to implement Generation Global in the community.
Generation Global in collaboration with Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB) will provide certificates to both students and teachers for participating in the Generation Global programme. Rwanda Basic Education Board will continue to work tirelessly with aim of achieving the desired quality education, through partnering with different stakeholders in education sector.
